Services and Information from Guardian Security Training
We are a veteran-owned facility, with a
mission to support and honor those who have served. Guardian Security Training
are the only security guard training facility on Long Island to offer the US
military veteran discounts* and assistance in applying for waivers to New York
State for certain required courses to become an unarmed or armed security
guard.
*Subject to availability. Discounted pricing
is not available for all courses and/or class sessions. Students who register
under the veteran’s price tier must submit proof for eligibility.
Veterans Security
Guard Training Waiver Eligibility
As of 2016, the New York State Division of Criminal
Justice Services has determined that completion of certain levels of training
in the US Army, US Marine Corps, US Air Force, and US Navy branches, will be
credited toward the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course, the 16 Hour On-The-Job Training Course, and the 47 Hour Firearms Training Course. (for armed guards)

16 Hour On-The-Job Training Course
47 Hour Firearms Training Course (for
armed guard registration)
IMPORTANT
WAIVER INFORMATION
In
part of obtaining the waiver, the NYS Department of Labor requires that you
complete the following additional courses, provided free of charge by the DOL:
The
New York State Department of Labor Legal Powers and Limitations Course.
FEMA
IS-100.b (now IS-100.C) Online Course (Intro to Incident
Command System)
For
Armed Guards: If you are eligible for a waiver for the 47 Hour Firearms Training
Course, in addition to the above course requirements by the DOL, you must:
1.
Have a New York State pistol permit
2.
Complete the 8 Hour Annual Firearms Training Course by an approved training
provider, such as Guardian Security Training. You must receive a waiver for the
NYSDOL Central Office in order to register for the 8 Hour Annual Firearms
Training Course.
How
do I submit a waiver?
If you are on the track to become a registered an armed guard and qualify for a waiver for the 47 Hour Firearms Training Course,
you must be issued a waiver by the NYSDOL Central Office before you can
register for the 8 Hour Annual Firearms Training Course. Submit proof of
qualifying military training completion (DD-214 or military transcripts) via email to mailto:ask.vets@labor.ny.gov

Once
you receive the waiver for the 8 Hour Firearms Training and complete the
course, you must complete and submit the requirements in the checklist.
If
you are becoming a registered unarmed guard, you must submit the application
packet. If you want to become a registered armed guard, but are not eligible
for the 47 Hour Firearms Training waiver, you can 1. Submit your application as
an unarmed guard and complete the armed guard requirements to apply for an
upgrade, or 2. Complete the armed guard requirements: have a New York State
pistol permit, then complete the 47
Hour Firearms Training and the 8
Hour Annual Firearms Training and submit an armed
guard application to the Department of State.
The following checklist must be submitted to the New York State Department of Labor
Central Office to process your waivers and submit your security guard
application to the Department of State:

Proof of completion of the qualifying
military training (DD-214 or military transcript. Instructions
to request transcripts)

Proof of passing the Legal Powers and
Limitations Course test (completed with the Department of Labor)
·
Copy of the completion certificate for
FEMA Emergency Management Institute IS-100.b (IS -100.C) training (can be completed online here)
·
Fingerprinting (Must complete this the request form and schedule an appointment
with an approved fingerprinting location)
·
$36 Money order or cashier’s check made
payable to the NYS Department of State

courses. In order to qualify for the
discounted pricing, you must be separated
